The Truth About Retirement

Before you start reading the rest of this article, I want you to think back to when you were a kid and the dreams and goals you had for when you became an adult.

Do you remember that?

I remember wanting to be a cop, a cowboy, a comedian, and even a professional basketball player.

Then I went through school and somehow that experience left me with less and less dreams and by the time I graduated I felt like I had just served a prison sentence.

As an adult, I was ill-equipped to survive and found myself living desperately just to make ends meet.

And then I got married and I found myself still trying to survive, but also trying to solve interpersonal problems and my goals were no longer something I thought about and when I did, it seemed inapplicable and unrealistic.

Unfortunately, that is the cycle most adults go through.

We start with dreams.

We go through school and lose sight of those dreams.

We are thrown headfirst into surviving as an adult and are consumed by solving those problems.

We get married and start a family and we add to those problems.

Then we do things like sign mortgages, car loans, and invest for retirement and add financial problems.

Our attention becomes so focused on solving past and present problems that we no longer think about the future.

Then enters the concept of retirement. “What if you could finally have a break from it all?”

The house is paid off. The kids have moved out. All you’ve got to do is keep going long enough and save up a nest egg and maybe…just maybe you can finally have a break.

That’s really the life we live for the most part and the majority of financial institutions and experts are just there to help you manage your way through that process and those problems better so you can maybe achieve that dream of retirement.

Well, what if retirement was the wrong goal altogether?

What if the idea of retirement was actually the source of most of these problems (especially the financial ones)?

When you were a kid and you had goals and dreams did it include “I want to be a ______ when I’m older… so that one day I can retire and not have to anymore?” I know my goals didn’t include that.

Why?

Because as a kid, I had the idea of building the life of my dreams. Why would I ever need to retire from that or take a break from it?

Think about this:

If you got rid of the concept of retirement and instead you focused on living the best life possible in a way that aligns with your true goals and purposes every single day of your life from now on…what would change immediately?

Would you still work at the job you work at?

Would you still give money to Wall Street?

Would you still put off experiences that you desire for later?

I believe if you were to literally cancel the idea of retirement and instead focus on aligning your life with your goals and purposes, you’d live a better life.

I believe you’d change the way you do finances.

I believe you’d travel more now.

I believe you’d find ways to spend more time with your family.

I believe you’d invest for passive income that enhances your quality of life today instead of giving it all to Wall Street for the next few decades in hopes that they give you back more then so you can finally live the life you’ve been putting off all these years.

I believe you’d do work you loved and have no issue doing it even when you’re older because you enjoy it and don’t really do it for the paycheck.

This is what I’m doing. This is what my clients are doing. We live happier lives. We have both time and money and we use them to improve the quality of life for ourselves, our loved ones and the world around us.
